Johnson Controls posts 45% surge in profit

Last update: 4:23 p.m. EST Jan. 18, 200 SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Johnson Controls said Friday it had posted a 45% surge in first-quarter profit on the back of strong global demand for its eco-friendly building services and improved pricing in its automotive division.  Shares of the auto parts and building systems manufacturer (JCI: 33.93, -0.33, -1.0%) , however, reversed course with the broader market to close down 5.2% at $32.01.  Johnson Controls, known for its car seats and batteries, reported earnings of $235 million, or 39 cents a share, up from $162 million, or 27 cents a share, a year earlier.  Total revenue for the quarter rose to $9.48 billion, up from $8.21 billion, despite the current housing slump and weaker vehicle demand.
